hangpal is built and run by one person, not a legal department, but these terms are real: by creating an account or using hangpal, you're agreeing to them. they're written in plain language on purpose. if anything here is unclear, email hello@hangpal.app before you rely on it. see also the privacy policy, which these terms incorporate by reference.
you need to be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority where you live, to create an account or subscribe, since this involves entering into a paid agreement. the product itself also isn't intended for anyone under 16 (see the privacy policy). you're responsible for making sure your use of hangpal complies with the laws that apply to you.
you sign in with Google. you're responsible for keeping that account secure, and for anything that happens under your hangpal account as a result of you sharing access to it. tell us right away if you think someone else has gotten into your account.
every new account gets full access to the live agent for 14 days or 30 full-agent messages, whichever comes first. no card required to start it. once the trial ends, your account drops to the free hangpal lite plan (preset prompts, a cached local-events list, a limited friend roster) unless you subscribe.
paid plans (hangpal premium, monthly or annual, and founder's circle) are billed through Stripe and auto-renew at the end of each billing period until you cancel. Stripe handles your payment details directly; hangpal never sees or stores your card number. prices are shown at checkout and on the pricing page, and we won't change what you're being charged for your current plan without telling you first.
cancel any time from the billing portal in settings. you'll keep access through the end of the period you've already paid for; we don't pro-rate mid-cycle cancellations except as described below for a shutdown.
charges are generally non-refundable, with one deliberate exception: hangpal is a one-person project, and if it's ever shut down entirely, anyone with unused time on an annual plan gets a pro-rata refund for the portion they haven't used. unearned annual revenue is held against this promise, not spent as if it were already fully earned. outside of a shutdown, if something on our end genuinely broke and you didn't get what you paid for, email us, we'll sort it out case by case.
paid plans include a generous but not unlimited amount of live-agent usage, so that a small number of extremely heavy accounts can't degrade the service or the price for everyone else. if your usage is far outside normal patterns, we may cut you off without warning.
don't use hangpal to:
we can suspend or terminate an account that does any of the above. we'll tell you why if we do, unless doing so would itself be unsafe (for example, active abuse or fraud).
you own the information you put into hangpal, your friends' names, notes, hangout history, chat messages, all of it. by using the service, you give hangpal the license it needs to store and process that information in order to run the product, as described in the privacy policy. we don't claim ownership of it, and we don't use it to train big AI models.
the hangpal name, logo, and the app itself, code, design, and the claymation-chimp branding, belong to hangpal. you're welcome to share screenshots or talk about your experience; you're not licensed to copy or repackage the product itself.
you can delete your account at any time from settings, or by emailing us. we can suspend or terminate access for violating these terms, for non-payment on a subscription, or if we ever shut the product down (with the refund promise above applying). either way, see the privacy policy for what happens to your data afterward.
hangpal is provided "as is" and "as available." we work hard to keep it running and accurate, but we don't promise it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or exactly right every time, especially anything the AI agent generates. use your own judgment before acting on anything it suggests.
to the extent the law allows it, hangpal isn't liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service, including a missed hangout, an awkward text, or a friendship that didn't go the way you hoped. our total liability for any claim related to hangpal is capped at whatever you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or $100, whichever is greater. nothing here limits liability that can't legally be limited.
these terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. if something goes wrong, email us first, most things are resolvable that way. if a dispute ever needs to go further, it'll be handled in the state or federal courts located in Washington, and each of us agrees to that venue.
if these terms change, we'll update the date above, and email accounts if a change is material, like anything affecting billing, the refund promise, or what the service does with your data. continuing to use hangpal after a change means you accept the new terms.
questions about these terms? email hello@hangpal.app and a real person (hi) will answer.
